How do I clean the Fliphead?

You can pull the mouthpiece off the neck and use water for cleansing. Do not use any type of alcohol based cleaner. If the rubber sealings come off while cleaning, just slide them back in place. The neck can be cleaned with a neck wipe cloth and can be polished using silver polish if it has become tarnished.

Where is the difference between the Fliphead and a normal flute head?

Both the normal flute head joint and the Fliphead have their own qualities relating to sound and playability. Imagine the Fliphead as a mixture between a recorder flute and (irish) low whistle. The tone production (embouchure) is much easier to learn in comparison to a conventional straight head. Beginners will be able to play first tones within minutes. The chamber, window and air tunnel are designed so that saxophonists and clarinetists can directly adapt to the airflow of the Fliphead. The playing feel is much more "open" compared to a recorder type mouthpiece. Compared to a normal flute head joint the sound quality is less focussed and more "wooden" or "airy". The Fliphead also offers a more ergonomic playing position because the flute is being played upright not traverse.   The idea behind the Fliphead is to offer a quick approach to c-flute for beginners and to give experienced players another sound option and a different playing feel.

What material is the Fliphead made of?

Due to the big chamber geometry the mouthpiece is produced in a one-piece-design via laser sintering (SLS) using 100% biocompatible nylon polyamide material called PA 12. The process is more complex and expensive than conventional plastic moulding but leads to a scratch-resistant and break-proof mouthpiece with very good sound characteristics. To allow for a good airflow the mouthpiece is treated to have a smooth finish.  The thumb rest also is made of PA12 but has a rough surface to allow for a good grip.  The neck is made of german silver (nickel silver) and is silver plated.

Can I rotate the mouthpiece?

Yes. The mouthpiece is designed to rotate freely. It uses flexible rubber O-ring-sealings. You can apply some (cork-)grease to the sealings, if the mouthpiece sits too tight. You can also pull off the mouthpiece for cleaning purposes or to exchange the rubber sealings. Each bundle comes with an extra set of spare O-rings.

The thumb rest is clipped onto your flute body and can slide to your desired playing position.  Each bundle comes with a thin transparent protective sticker to protect the silver plating.

How do I tune the Fliphead!

Like with a conventional flute headjoint, you can fine tune the intonation by pulling or pushing the neck out or into the flute body. The neck should go into the flute body all the way for a pitch at around 443HZ. By pulling the neck out you should end up at around 439HZ.

Does the Fliphead work with my flute?

The Fliphead is designed to work with all common c-flute bodies such as Yamaha, Pearl, Sankyo, Azumi, Jupiter and many other brands. It also works with B-foot-flutes. Usually flute bodies vary between 19,7mm - 20.00mm inner diameter. The neck comes with an outer diameter of approx. 19,7mm. Out of the box it fits e.g. Pearl Quantz-series, Azumi Z- und S-series, Yamaha YFL-2xx, YFL-3xxx and YFL-4xxx. Like with any new flute headjoint, the Fliphead might need some custom fitting to each individual flute. If the Fliphead is too tight or too loose your local instrument technician can easily adapt the neck to your individual flute diameter. Make sure that the fit is tight but with enough flexibility so you can still tune your flute. Always use a caliper gauge to measure your flute. A ruler or a measering tape is not accurate.

Can I play the whole register from top to bottom?

Yes. You can play all notes using all normal fingerings.  The low register needs less air than the middle register. The top register needs a faster airflow to "overblow". Lower tones can be played long and soft, while high notes tend to be shorter and louder. This is typical for all fipple type mouthpieces (recorders, tin whistles, low whistles). Each register has a "sweet spot" related to air consumption in which dynamics, vibrato and bendings can be performed.

Wie kann ich den Fliphead reinigen?

Das Mundstück lässt sich vom Rohr abziehen und mit Wasser reinigen. Bitte keine alkohol-basierten Reinigungsmittel verwenden. Falls sich bei der Reinigung die Dichtungsringe lösen, so lassen sich diese einfach wieder in ihre Position zurückschieben. Der S-Bogen lässt sich mit einem Mikrofasertuch oder einem Silberputztuch wieder auf Hochglanz polieren.

Ja, das Mundstück wird auf flexiblen Gummi-Dichtungsringen gelagert und lässt sich frei auf dem Rohr drehen. Bei Bedarf kann etwas Fett / Korkfett auf die Dichtungsringe angebracht werden. Das Mundstück lässt sich auch von Rohr abziehen, um es bspw zu reinigen oder um die Dichtungsringe zu ersetzen. Jedes Fliphead-Bundle wird mit 3 Ersatz-Dichtungen ausgeliefert.

Wie stimme ich die Flöte?

Wie beim herkömmlichen Flötenkopf, wird auch der Fliphead durch Rein- & Rausziehen des Rohres am Flötenkorpus gestimmt. Wichtig: Anders als beim Saxophon wird nicht am Mundstück, sondern das Rohr selbst gestimmt. Der Fliphead sollte sich ganz bis zum Anschlag in den Korpus einschieben lassen und sollte dann bei etwa 443HZ sein. Durch Herausziehen lassen sich ca 439HZ erreichen.

Der Daumenhaken wird einfach auf die Flöte geclippt und lässt sich in alle Richtungen verschieben.  Jedem Fliphead liegt ein durchsichtiger Aufkleber (Schutzfolie) bei, um die Versilberung der Flöte zu schützen.

Der Fliphead funktioniert mit Querflöten-Korpussen aller gängigen Hersteller (bspw Yamaha, Pearl, Jupiter, Sankyo, Azumi u.v.a.). Auch H-Fuß-Flöten können mit dem Fliphead gespielt werden. Der Fliphead ist nicht für die Nutzung mit Alt-Flöten oder Piccolo-Flöten gebaut. Wie bei jedem neuen Flötenkopf, benötigt der Fliphead je nach Flötenmodell unter Umständen eine individuelle Anpassung. Üblicherweise haben Querflöten einen Innendurchmesser von etwa 19,7 - 20,00 mm.  Das Rohr des Flipheads wird mit einem Aussendurchmesser von ca 19,7 mm ausgeliefert. Ohne individuelle Anpassung passt der Fliphead beispielsweise auf folgende Flötenmodelle:  Pearl Quantz-Serie, Azumi Z- und S-Serie, Yamaha YFL-2xx, YFL-3xxx, YFL-4xxx. Wenn der Fliphead zu fest or zu locker sitzen sollte, kann ein Blasinstrumetenmacher oder die Fachabteilung im Musikgeschäft diese Anpassungen und wenigen Minuten übernehmen. Der Fliphead sollte fest sitzen, sich aber trotzdem zur Feinjustierung der Intonation noch bewegen lassen. Wichtig ist, beim Nachmessen des Durchmessers eine Schieblehre zu verwenden. Lineale oder Massbänder eignen sich nicht, um einen genauen Wert zu ermitteln.

Aus welchem Material wird der Fliphead hergestellt?

Aufgrund der großen Luftkammer des Mundstücks wird der Fliphead via "Laser Sintering" (SLS) aus einem nylon basierten Material namens PA12 hergestellt. Der Herstellungsprozess ist wesentlich aufwändiger als Plastik-Spritzguss, wie er bei günstigen Blockflötenköpfen Anwendung findet, führt jedoch zu einem 100% biokompatiblen, kratzfesten und bruchsicheren Mundstück, welches in einem Stück gefertigt wird und somit ohne Klebstoffe und ohne Nachbearbeitung auskommt.  Um einen besseren Luftfluss zu gewährleisten, hat das Mundstück eine glatte Oberfläche. Der Daumenhaken wird ebenfalls aus PA12 hergestellt hat jedoch eine raue Oberfläche, um eine bessere Haftung zu gewährleisten.  Der S-Bogen ist aus versilbertem Neusilber gefertigt.

Kann ich alle Register der Querflöte spielen?

Ja, es können mit dem Fliphead das gesamte Register der Querflöte gespielt werden. Das tiefe Register benötigt einen langsamen Luftfluss, als das mittlere Register. Die hohen Noten benötigen "schnellere Luft" um "überblasen" zu werden. Somit sind die tiefen Töne leiser und können länger ausgehalten werden, während die langen Töne tendenziell lauter sind und dementsprechend kürzer gehalten werden können. Dies ist typisch für die Bauweisen von Blockflöten, Tin Whistles oder Low Whistles und unterscheidet sich vom normalen Silberkopf. Mit etwas Übung lassen sich in jedem Register Dynamikunterschiede, Vibrato und Bendings ausführen.

Was unterscheidet den Fliphead vom normalen Flötenkopf?

Der normale Silberkopf und der Fliphead sind zwei ganz unterschiedliche Mundstücke und haben beide eigene Klangcharakteristen und spezifische Eigenschaften. Man kann sich den Fliphead als eine Art Blockflötenmundstück für die Querflöte vorstellen. So lässt sich die Querflöte wie eine Irish Whistle oder Low Whistle spielen - nur eben mit dem chromatischen Tonspektrum. Die Tonproduktion (= Ansatz) ist beim Fliphead viel einfacher und schneller zu erlernen, als beim herkömmlichen Flötenmundstück. So können Anfänger bereits nach wenigen Minuten erste Tonleitern erlernen. Die Kammergröße, das Kammerfenster und der Luftkanal unterscheiden sich jedoch sehr von einem Blockflötenmundstück und sind so konzipiert, dass auch erfahrene Saxophonisten und Klarinettisten sich sehr schnell an das Spielgefühl des Flipheads gewöhnen können.  Im Vergleich zu einer Blockflöte ist der Fliphead lauter und fühlt sich "offener" an.  Man benötigt mehr Luft, als bei einer Blockflöte. Im Vergleich zum normalen Silberkopf ist der Klang des Flipheads weniger zentriert und klingt eher "holzig" und "luftig". Ausserdem ermöglicht der Fliphead eine ergonomischere Spielposition, da die Flöte nun nicht mehr quer, sondern hochkant vor dem Körper gespielt werden kann.  Die grundsätzliche Idee des Flipheads ist es also nicht, das herkömmliche Flötenmundstück zu ersetzen. Vielmehr bietet der Fliphead einen ganz neuen Sound und erleichtert Anfängern und erfahrenen Saxophonisten*innen oder Klarnettist*innen den Zugang zu Querflöte.
